Jeremy Chinn’s recent comments revealed why he believes the Las Vegas Raiders are building a stronger culture in 2026.
Chinn’s press conference this week stood out for all the right reasons. While training camp is usually filled with polished, coach-approved answers, Chinn offered something more revealing. Entering his second season with the Raiders and seventh in the NFL, he sounded less like a player trying to earn his place and more like one determined to lead.
The clearest example came when he was asked how he wants to grow this season. His answer was simple and honest: “Be a better leader on and off the field.” Asked how he’s already working on that, he didn’t reach for a cliche. He pointed to something specific. He’s using his voice more. “It’s easy to come in and just put my head down and work,” he said. “But the more I use my voice, I think guys listen to that and bring guys around me.” That’s a veteran naming a real growth area; not more typical camp gibberish.

He was generous with credit, too, and it came across as genuine. Chinn praised Taron Johnson’s versatility in the secondary, going back to conversations they had in the spring about where Johnson would line up. He gave Eric Stokes credit for shutting down a side of the field last year. Afterward, he called Hezekiah Masses technically sharp since the day he arrived. Every answer had a small, specific detail attached. That’s usually a sign someone is actually paying attention, not just saying the right things.
There’s a physical side to his optimism, too. Asked about the first practice in full pads, Chinn didn’t hide how much he’d missed contact. “It’s been a long time. So, it felt good,” he said. For a player who built his reputation on physicality, that matters. Padded practices are where his game shows up, and he sounds eager to get back to it early.
The most interesting moment came when Chinn talked about the bigger picture. He mentioned watching practice film in team meetings and being struck by how much sharper the team already looks compared to last year. He even called the old tape “almost embarrassing” by comparison. That’s a notable thing for a player to admit, especially one who was part of that older group. It suggests he genuinely believes Klint Kubiak’s staff, along with Rob Leonard’s expanded role as defensive coordinator, is already raising the standard.
Chinn wasn’t about to reveal the Raiders’ defensive blueprint, but his confidence in Rob Leonard’s culture and the young talent around him said plenty. Buy-in doesn’t guarantee wins, but when a respected veteran sounds this convinced, it’s usually worth paying attention.
