Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak spoke Friday about which undrafted rookies have caught his eye late in training camp.
Addressing the media with Thursday’s action surely being analyzed, Kubiak singled out linebacker Cian Slone for his defensive play. He then pointed to wide receivers Chase Roberts and E.J. Williams Jr. as two who’ve “showed up,” including strong snaps in Thursday’s outing.
Kubiak said he was also thinking of another name he couldn’t recall in the moment but framed the group’s broader value around special teams’ contributions as the preseason rolls on.
Who will crack the final 53?
For the Raiders, who are in the process of finalizing their 53-man roster, this situation is significant. Undrafted players rarely secure starting positions; it’s a fact. However, they’re vying for the last 5-10 roster spots. Those spots often hinge on their contributions to special teams—a point Kubiak highlighted.
Roberts and Williams are currently fighting for depth at receiver. It’s a position where Las Vegas already has established names ahead of them. In turn, that means their path onto the roster likely runs through returns, coverage units, and practice squad eligibility rather than snaps on offense. Slone’s emergence on defense adds a name to watch in a linebacker room that could use young depth. None of these players carry meaningful cap implications yet, so there’s that. Still, a strong special teams profile can be the difference between making the 53 and landing on the practice squad or getting cut entirely.

There are two preseason games remaining, so look for Kubiak and staff to rely heavily on special teams reps to help make final decisions on these roster bubble spots. Also, don’t be surprised if Roberts or Williams has a bigger role on offense this week. Particularly as the staff is trying to get a better read before reductions.
