Cousins remains the presumptive Week 1 starter for the Raiders against Miami, but the certainty around that plan is fraying. Adam Schefter revealed on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he received a text from a source claiming Mendoza “will start sooner than you think.” Schefter still expects Cousins under center in the opener. Still, Las Vegas has notably declined to formally name a starter. Of course, that leaves the door cracked for a faster-than-expected transition.
For the Raiders, this isn’t just quarterback drama; it’s an organizational crossroads. Cousins was brought in on a veteran contract specifically to stabilize the position. But also to buy Mendoza development time. Meanwhile, his cap number makes him the plan by default, not just preference.

The most informed read: a shaky start against Miami, especially one marked by turnovers or protection issues, likely accelerates Mendoza’s timeline into September rather than the Raiders waiting out a bad stretch on principle.
