The Klint Kubiak era is finally here, and the new Las Vegas Raiders head coach isn’t treating his debut like a celebration. He’s treating it like a test.
Kubiak addressed the media this week ahead of his first game as an NFL head coach, and he struck a notably businesslike tone. Rather than dwelling on the milestone, Kubiak said preparation mattered more than excitement, credited his staff and players for the work since April, and closed simply: “We’re ready to play.”
Kubiak’s measured approach is crucial for a Raiders team undergoing significant transition. He is not only stepping into the role of head coach but is also responsible for calling plays and managing the offense. This dual responsibility requires him to divide his focus between game management and play design, a challenge that many first-time head coaches don’t face.
A new approach for the rookie Raiders head coach…
He was candid about the learning curve, noting he no longer has time for things he once handled personally and now leans heavily on his coordinators, trainers, and strength staff to fill the gaps. For a roster already adjusting to a new offensive system under Kirk Cousins and now missing Brock Bowers to open the season, that division of labor becomes even more important.
If Kubiak’s support staff can’t cover for him seamlessly, it could show up in slow starts, clock management issues, or hesitation in offensive play calling, especially in a season opener with all its unpredictability.
On the other hand, if the staff structure he’s built holds up, it’s a sign the Raiders have the infrastructure to support a coach wearing two hats long term, which matters for continuity and cap efficiency since it reduces the need to pay a separate high-priced offensive coordinator down the line.

Expect Kubiak to lean conservatively early in games as he calibrates how much he can handle in real time, gradually expanding his playcalling aggressiveness as the season goes on and he trusts his staff more.
