The Las Vegas Raiders are slowly unleashing Jermod McCoy, and the rookie cornerback could soon create a very good problem for the Silver and Black.
Klint Kubiak gave his most direct update yet on Jermod McCoy’s return. He said the rookie cornerback logged “meaningful snaps” in Sunday’s game and has earned an expanded role.
“We’re going to keep building him up, keep building his confidence, and he’s given us the confidence to play him more,” Kubiak told reporters Monday.
The coach also credited wellness coordinator Alex Guerrero, Chris Cortez and head athletic trainer Scott Touchet for getting McCoy game-ready. He also praised the fourth-round pick’s own work ethic in overcoming a torn ACL that knocked him out of last year’s draft process.
For Las Vegas, this is bigger than one cornerback’s health update…
McCoy was a Day 3 steal. He was considered first-round talent before the injury, and the Raiders spent a fourth-round pick betting his recovery would pay off.
A healthy, trusted McCoy changes the outside cornerback picture behind Eric Stokes and 2025 third-rounder Darien Porter. It also gives Las Vegas a cheap, controllable long-term answer at a premium position instead of leaning on veteran depth or future draft capital to fix the room.

Kubiak’s own comments Monday framed it as a “good problem.” He named McCoy and Zeke Masses as players actively pushing Porter for reps. That is a sign the competition, not a settled pecking order, is now driving playing time.
That matters for a defense still finding its identity under coordinator Rob Leonard. It’s also exactly the kind of cost-controlled young talent the Raiders’ rebuild needs if they’re going to spend cap dollars elsewhere.
What happens next is fairly predictable. Expect McCoy’s snap count to climb in stages over the next two or three weeks rather than jumping straight into a starting role. Kubiak will likely manage his workload closely to avoid a setback before handing him full-time reps by midseason.
