Raiders QB Derek Carr Already Getting MVP-Level Praise

We’re not in Week 3 of the NFL season yet but did Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr insert himself into an important conversation?

It was not that long ago that some wondered whether Carr was truly the answer for the Raiders. After a long offseason full of speculation, rumors, and hearsay, nothing changed. The Silver and Black were going into 2020 the same way they did in 2019, with Carr leading the way. However, in head coach Jon Gruden’s third year, there needed to be signs of improvement, and the earlier the better. Well, don’t look now but Carr is looking like the 2016 version of himself, even if it’s only two games.

Carr’s former teammate from his rookie year, wide receiver James Jones, believes the signal-caller made a statement Monday night. On NFL Total Access, Jones stated Carr put on a show to the point he should now be mentioned in early MVP talks. That’s quite the compliment all things considered.

Carr Leading Raiders in MVP Fashion?

As far as the numbers go, Carr put them up and did so impressively. He went 28 for 38 totaling 282 passing yards and had three touchdown passes. Furthermore, he finished Monday night with a 120.7 quarterback rating and a 77.1 QBR rating per ESPN.

Is the MVP chatter a bit premature? Perhaps. In fact, despite coming away with a victory, many believe such talk shouldn’t be taking place so early. Jones’ words on Twitter received quick backlash.

For now, the Silver and Black will take the win all MVP talk notwithstanding. Let’s see how Carr performs in these next few games then such a conversation could carry more weight.
