The Las Vegas Raiders have decided to part ways with wide receiver Tyrell Williams but will they regret it?
The consensus among observers is that Las Vegas needs to allocate most of its resources to the defense. Considering how poorly the unit performed in 2020, this is a fair assessment. However, the Raiders’ brain trust surely can’t afford to neglect the offense this offseason, right? The first domino among others to fall recently was Tyrell Williams, who was cut in favor of more cap space.
As far as wide receivers go, the Raiders need to be careful with how they approach the position. It’s plausible that Williams was simply a victim of terrible timing with his injuries. Those injuries cost him the 2020 season and derailed a promising 2019 campaign. Looking at the big picture, the Silver and Black could be putting themselves in a better financial position to retain Nelson Agholor.
Are the Raiders picking Agholor over Williams?
With the offseason now in full swing, the team is getting all their ducks in a row, and cutting Williams was just the first piece. When Williams was on the field though, he showed promise especially the Antonio Brown fiasco. His early run of five straight games with a touchdown to open the 2019 season was auspicious. Looking back though, it became a mirage as Williams’ injuries ruined his run with the Raiders.
The former Western Oregon Wolf was picked up by the Detroit Lions rather quickly. It would be in typical Raiders fashion if Williams were to redeem himself with his new team. He is after all joining a squad with Jared Goff, a quarterback throwing to a unit that could feature a brand new receiver corps. For now, Raider Nation has to patiently wait to see what their team’s shot-callers have in store at wide receiver.
