Raiders Apparently Complete WR Room With Zay Jones

The Las Vegas Raiders have had an NFL free agency period that has bewildered their fan base. However, bringing back Zay Jones appears to make sense.

While it may upset some in Raider Nation, it appears Las Vegas has set their wide receiver room for 2021. The organization is bringing back Zay Jones, though terms have yet to be officially released. According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the unit is apparently ready to roll with Jones, Henry Ruggs III, Hunter Renfrow, Bryan Edwards, and John Brown.

This may not be the news some were hoping for but fans shouldn’t be too surprised. Coming into this offseason, the first and second priorities were to address the defensive line, and they’ve done that. After a series of cuts and signings, this Raiders team will look drastically different along several positions, especially in the trenches. Wide receiver was never regarded as a ‘hole’ per se, especially when tight end Darren Waller is the true number-one receiving option. Nevertheless, Mr. Jones appears to be getting another opportunity in Silver and Black.

What are the Raiders getting in Jones?

Unless injuries befall the Raiders, Jones won’t be seeing too much action, he’ll likely be buried in the depth chart. Originally acquired for a fifth-round pick back in 2019, Jones has seen action but not much to show for it. He’s played 26 games while starting nine, in that stretch, Jones caught just one touchdown. In total, he has accumulated 301 receiving yards off of 34 receptions since 2019.

The former second-round pick has shown if nothing else, he’s reliable. Since 2018, Jones only six drops counted against him and has shown he can move the chains, he had 33 first down catches back in his rookie year. Jones was on the field for 27% of the Raiders’ offensive snaps so clearly the coaching staff sees something in him. For now, we’ll continue to monitor the team’s free-agent activity, keep it here at the Raider Ramble.
