As the Las Vegas Raiders’ preseason nears its end, they will play the San Francisco 49ers today. Similar to the first two games, most Las Vegas starters will not be playing. Regardless, there is always something to be learned.Â
Can Nathan Peterman earn a roster spot?
With Marcus Mariota hurt for much of the offseason, Nathan Peterman has been the only Raider to throw a pass this preseason. As such, he has had ample time to earn himself a roster spot. However, you can only keep 53 players on your roster in the NFL so using three of them on quarterbacks is always a tough ask. Alas, Jon Gruden loves Peterman and if he has a big game on Sunday, he could very well earn himself a spot.
How will the wide receiver room shake out?
Of course, some of these positions are locked in. Henry Ruggs III, Bryan Edwards, and Hunter Renfrow are assuredly going to make the team. However, this is a crowded room that could leave veterans like John Brown and Willie Snead without a spot. Zay Jones has looked great so far, so if he can repeat that on Sunday, he could lock in a roster spot. Watch for D.J. Turner as well. A talented kick returner, he could be valuable special teams depth for Las Vegas.
Arden Key revenge game?
The former Raider has been very vocal since leaving the Raiders. Now a 49er, he will get his first chance against the Raiders on Sunday. After saying “I wanted to get out of there” in a recent press conference, Key will be very motivated this weekend as he looks to not only prove a point but to make the team in San Francisco.
Stay injury free…
In the last exhibition game of the season, this is paramount. This is especially true at linebacker. After the recent injuries of Nicholas Morrow and Javin White, the Raiders must stay healthy at this position. Keeping all the rookies upright will be huge as well. As is the case in most final preseason games, the Raiders will likely not play anyone of importance. This game will be used for determining the last few roster spots and nothing else.
