2021 Raiders Rewind: Hunter Renfrow’s Legend Grows

The man nicknamed “third and Renfrow” became a household name this past season. Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow has been a Raider Nation favorite since being drafted in 2019. The former Clemson star had a breakout year in 2021, which has fans hoping he never leaves Sin City.

Renfrow has always been overlooked since he doesn’t have the physique of Davante Adams or D.K. Metcalf, but around the league, defenders know exactly who he is.

His breakout season saw him accumulate 103 receptions, 1,038 yards, and nine touchdowns. All of these are career highs so far, but with Renfrow, it’s safe to say that it could only be a matter of time before he surpasses them. Here are three big moments from Renfrow’s 2021 season.

Let’s take a look at Renfrow’s best moments…

Week 4 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

On a fourth-down play, the Chargers lined up to punt and Renfrow lined up to return. With the ball snapped, it was a fake and the punter threw a pass to the open receiver, only for Renfrow to deliver a perfect form hit and dislodge the ball from the receiver for an incomplete pass. This came in a loss, but it showed just how much Renfrow is willing to do for the team.

Week 17 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Having already caught a touchdown in this game, Renfrow’s fingerprints were everywhere. With the score tied and the Raiders driving, the legend of Renfrow would grow again. With pressure in the face of Derek Carr as he released the pass, Renfrow reached out and, in one of the most clutch moments of the season, made the catch just over the fingertips of the defender. Renfrow tripped and got up to what seemed to be a touchdown. A review showed that he was just clipped by a fingertip, and it was called back. The Raiders would go on to win on a last-second field goal due to this play.

Week 18 against the Chargers, shaking Chris Harris Jr. pre-snap

With the playoffs at stake and the Raiders holding a six-point lead entering the fourth quarter, Renfrow was Renfrow. He went in motion and was being shadowed by Chris Harris Jr., but as the ball was snapped, Renfrow did one of his signature moves and became open and caught a touchdown to put the Raiders up 12. The Raiders went on to win a wild game and make the playoffs.

Extension From The Raiders?

Renfrow is a core member of this team. He plays with everything and is loved by the fanbase. He is in the third year of his rookie deal. The deal is not a big spending deal since he was a fifth-round pick. As a good faith gesture, with everything he’s accomplished and demonstrated value for, the Raiders might be wise to try to extend him now as a good faith gesture. Renfrow is a piece that this team cannot afford to lose right now and reaching out now could help get a deal done and possibly save money going forward. I mean, the man is going to the Pro Bowl, after all.
