Raiders Prospect Watch: Louisiana QB Levi Lewis

The NFL has seen an uptick in smaller, mobile quarterbacks making strides, such as Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray. Funny enough, Levi Lewis has been dubbed a “poor man’s Kyler Murray.” Be that as it may, Lewis put up a decent stat line at Louisiana, recording 2,917 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. Could the five-foot-11, 185-pound signal-caller get a shot in the NFL? Should the Las Vegas Raiders take a look?

What are Lewis’s strengths and weaknesses?

One of his biggest skills that will catch your eyes is his ability to take off in the pocket, and not just for a short burst for a good number of yards. While he can hurt you with his speed, his passing is even more lethal. Whether he is in the pocket or conducting a roll out, he can hit his targeted receiver. Lewis is someone that, despite his size, doesn’t let that affect him, and he uses that to his advantage to attack defenses. Take a look at his two best games, one versus Liberty, in which he outplayed a potential top fifteen pick in Malik Willis. Levi put up three touchdowns for 166 yards.

Another one of his best games to watch would be the R+L New Orleans Carrier Bowl. A game in which he not only defeated Marshall, but he put up 270 passing yards with one touchdown. During this bowl game, it was a bit of a tug of war before Lewis had to put his dual threat skills to use in order to put this game away.

The main weakness that he battles is due to his size, being under six feet and weighing under 200 pounds. The other two knocks would be that he can be inconsistent at times during games when he misses a receiver due to either an overthrow or an under-throw.

His worst games that show his major flaws are his games versus Texas, although he did put up a decent 282 passing yards. He struggled, completing his passes on only 28 out of 40 of his passes and having a negative nineteen rushing yards.

Should the Raiders use a Day 3 pick on Lewis?

While Lewis should surprise many scouts at the Hula Bowl, he’s still more than likely going to be a Day 3 pick. With his skill set, I can see him fitting with either the Seattle Seahawks, the Washington Football Team, or even the Houston Texans. He has sufficient talent to be a decent second-string quarterback with a chance to start if given the chance. My ceiling for Levi is Tyrod Taylor, with his floor being Jake Locker.
