Hunter Renfrow

Extension Makes Sense For Both Raiders and Hunter Renfrow

The Las Vegas Raiders just gave Hunter Renfrow a contract extension, locking him in for a few more years.

Hunter Renfrow’s contract details

According to Tom Pelissero, it is a two-year extension, worth $32 million over that span. That is an average annual value (AAV) of $16 million. Prior to the extension, the Clemson product was heading into the final year of his contract. Now he will be with the team at least through the 2024 season. Also, it’s worth noting that the contract has $21 million in guaranteed money. That makes this deal almost fully guaranteed.

Great Deal For “Third and Renfrow”

Hard work sure seems to have paid off here. After a huge season in which he caught 111 passes, Vegas’s Slot Machine gets a hefty pay day. The best part of this deal is the guaranteed money. Slot receivers tend to get pretty beat up, so this kind of security has extra value here. The AAV isn’t bad either. By that metric, he would be in the top 20 in the league this year, though that contract will not take effect until 2023. The deal looks even better when compared to Cooper Kupp’s contract, which has an AAV of $15.75 million, albeit for more years. Finally, the length of this contract is perhaps a win for Renfrow. He is 27 years old now, so the next time he would re-sign would be when he is 30. At that age, he would still be young enough to possibly get another big contract.

Smart deal for Las Vegas

Dave Ziegler does it again. He found a way to reward another key player while still being fiscally responsible. While the price tag may look high, keep in mind that guys like Amari Cooper make $20 million a year. Getting a guy who can catch a hundred balls in a year for less than that is a steal. Also, the length keeps Vegas from a long-term commitment. If in three years, Renfrow does earn himself a big contract, by that time most of the big money on Davante Adams’ contract will already be out of the way. This keeps the Raiders from having too much money tied up in one position.

Bottom line for Hunter Renfrow and the Raiders

Added to Derek Carr and Maxx Crosby, this is now the third major extension of the Ziegler era. All three deals have done two things. First, they all show a commitment to doing right by the leaders on this team from previous regimes. Second, none of the deals are huge overpays, which was a hallmark of the Raiders’ front offices for the last 20 years. So, the Raiders aren’t cleaning house with new decision makers in charge, and they aren’t overpaying players. This certainly feels like a new era for the Silver and Black.
