The saga regarding former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden continues to gain headlines despite the fact that he’s been largely out of the limelight. Most recently, his agent, Bob LaMonte, spoke up regarding his client. In particular, he spoke on the events that took him down, and more importantly, his future.
The “Jon Gruden emails” remain a big story
Gruden’s agent was vocal regarding his belief that the ex-Raiders coach was the victim of a hit job. He even recalled that Gruden was in a “state of shock” after he essentially had to resign following the release of less than flattering emails. Via JoeBucsFan and Ira Kaufman, LaMonte defended his client, emphasizing that at the time those messages were written, Gruden wasn’t in the league.
“And it was 10 years ago. And then why Jon and why the Raiders? He wasn’t even in the league at the time of those e-mails … that’s the tragedy of it. You can say what you want, but if anyone really understands Jon, they know he’s not a racist. That’s quite obvious. No one would ever say that.”
Whether you believe Gruden is racist or not, well, that’s a matter of opinion. His emails were quite disparaging towards DeMaurice Smith (NFLPA Director) and Michael Sam, who was the NFL’s first openly gay player. It’s a strange stance to take though. Is LaMonte implying Gruden really didn’t say those things? However, in Gruden’s defense, his agent makes the good point (as many others have too) that why weren’t other emails released? Gruden wasn’t even the focus of the original investigation that led to their release.
Since then, Gruden has been embroiled in a lawsuit with the league based on the fact that only six emails out of 650,00 were picked, according to LaMonte.
What about Gruden’s future?
If you were to ask most people, they’d likely tell you that there’s no way Gruden will ever return to the sidelines. Be as it may, LaMonte is quite optimistic that his client will return one day.
“I really believe in my heart and soul he will coach again. I’d be very surprised if he didn’t. My question is what did Jon really do? Most people wouldn’t want their private emails from 10 days ago looked at.”
What are your thoughts, Raider Nation? Do you think Gruden will actually make a return one day or have we seen his last days already as a head coach?
