Raiders Preseason: Analyzing Biggest Surprises So Far

The undefeated season is still alive, bay bay! The Las Vegas Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 26-20 at Allegiant Stadium to close out Week 2 of the preseason. Let’s dive in and give praise to some of the bigger surprises of the game.

Surprise No. 1 For The Raiders – DJ Turner Shows Off Versatility

The wide receiver room is looking more crowded by the day in Las Vegas. While Mack Hollins and Keelan Cole all made their respective catches to keep their names in the third receiver conversation, DJ Turner made the biggest impact in Week 2 of the preseason. A spark plug at five-foot-nine, the Pittsburgh product not only showed his skills after the catch with a 34-yard scamper, but he displayed his value as a kick returner. Turner needs to be able to do a lot of different things if he wants to make the 53-man roster.

Surprise No. 2 For The Raiders – Nick Mullens Makes Use Of Second Act

DJ Turner had some help getting into the endzone. That help came by way of a beautifully timed throw by quarterback Nick Mullens. After failing to impress in the Hall of Fame game, Mullens was arguably the better signal caller this past week. The Southern Mississippi alum was also able to scramble for a first down, letting the staff know Jarrett Stidham isn’t the only option to replace Marcus Mariota in the Wildcat packages. Mullens may look like a member of Rick Moranis’ team in Little Giants when he plays, but he has proven he can make plays with the lights on.

Surprise No. 3 For The Raiders – Sam Webb Holds Strong In Coverage

We all hoped to see a certain young cornerback excel in Sunday’s tilt with Minnesota. More on that specific name later.

UDFA corner Sam Webb may not get as much publicity when the media covers team practices, but he continues to look solid in coverage during these games. With the bulk of his position group currently out with injuries, the idea of these reps being a regular season test drive for the Missouri Western product becomes all the more real. Look for Webb to get more opportunities in Saturday’s contest as well.
