Las Vegas Raiders owner Al Davis was the best says Louis Murphy Jr.

Louis Murphy Jr. On Raiders Legend Al Davis: “Glad To Have Played For Such A Real Genuine Owner.”

Legendary Raiders owner Al Davis tends to trend on social media on Saturdays. Aptly dubbed “Al Davis Saturday.” This time, former receiver Louis Murphy Jr. shared some beautiful words on Saturday.

In a clip shared by Twitter user @NFLMAVERICK, the late owner spoke on the importance of being the first recipient of the NFL’s Players Association’s Retired Players Award of Excellence. Essentially, it was an honor that was bestowed upon Davis decades ago for leading the way in taking care of former players. As most Raiders fans are aware, Davis and the organization were well known for the mantra “once a Raider, always a Raider.” More than just words, it was a way of life–taking care of Raiders players even after their playing days were over.

What did Louis Murphy Jr. have to say about the Raiders legend?

For those of you not familiar with Murphy, he had some solid years with the Silver and Black. Also, keep in mind that he played during what we now call the “Dark Ages.” Still, he managed 1,130 receiving yards and six touchdowns—with JaMarcus Russell and Bruce Gradkowski as his quarterbacks, no less.

Also worthy of mention, Murphy averaged more than 15 yards per reception (15.1) during that run. His longest career catch went for 75 yards during his rookie campaign in 2009 as well.

In response to the Tweet showing the late Davis, Murphy added a little more depth. He didn’t refrain from citing his imperfections, but in the grand scheme of things, Davis was a pioneer regardless of how you felt about him as a person or NFL owner.

“So glad to have played for such a real, genuine owner. Might not be perfect in many people’s eyes, but this man was progressive in his thinking and was for equality for the black community.” via Twitter (@murph918)

Well said, Louis.

Whether you liked Davis as a person or not is a matter of personal opinion. The “maverick” had his share of issues that rubbed some the wrong way. One such incident? The benching of Marcus Allen, chief among them—but Davis’s impact is undeniable, on and off the field.
