The stance of Ashton Jeanty in the backfield at Boise State has grown into somewhat of an iconic pose. And yet, his coaches in the National Football League wasted little time tossing it aside. Thanks to the Las Vegas Raiders coaching staff, Jeanty has a new stance he uses in the backfield.
Not for no reason, either—Deland McCullough, Jeanty’s new running back coach, made that clear in a conversation with ESPN.
“There’s positives to being in a traditional stance,” McCullough explained. “It doesn’t take away from anything that you’re doing. What was being suggested to him and what he’s been doing at a high level is definitely not hurting his game by any stretch. It’s all in the eye of the beholder.”
There are two things to take away from McCullough’s comments; the first being the specific phrasing of Jeanty doing what’s been suggested, not told, for him to do. What this means is the Raiders’ coaching staff didn’t force anything upon their sixth-overall pick that he wasn’t comfortable with. They offered Jeanty a new way to do something, and the rookie took the advice in stride.
That’s a major footnote, because it directly ties into the second takeaway from McCullough’s comments.
Jeanty’s iconic stance wasn’t for no reason. As the 21-year-old once explained, the most important thing is being relaxed, and that stance is certainly one of relaxation. To take that relaxation away from Jeanty is far from a positive thing—but the Raiders didn’t take that away.
The team gave a suggestion, which Jeanty was comfortable enough to try out and run with. Meaning, Jeanty is managing to find some relaxation in his new stance as well. And that should be music to the ears of Raider Nation.
