Raiders News: Fernando Mendoza, NFL Draft, and more.

Raider Nation Chatter: Spytek Choosing between Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson?

The narrative that Ty Simpson is a better prospect than Fernando Mendoza poses a possible conundrum for the Las Vegas Raiders.

For months, Fernando Mendoza has been the consensus No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 draft class, and the resume backs it up. Heisman Trophy. Undefeated season. National championship. A performance against Ohio State that draft analyst Todd McShay called the best quarterback tape he had seen in two years. The case for Mendoza at the top of the board has never needed much defending.

Then Simpson started making evaluators uncomfortable.

McShay put it plainly: Simpson is running an NFL offense at an NFL level, and he has been doing it for nine games straight. The pre-snap reads, the urgency in his drops, and the command of the pocket. It looks like a finished product. That is not a minor data point. That is the kind of observation that quietly shifts draft boards in the final weeks before a selection is made.

So where does that leave the Raiders?

Las Vegas has spent the entire offseason acting like Mendoza is the answer but what if that assumption hasn’t really been tested? The ceiling is undeniable, and that Ohio State tape sells the belief. Still, when so much of his success comes from run-pass options and quick reads, it’s fair to ask: what happens when NFL defenses take those away?

Simpson, meanwhile, is answering that question in real time.

The Raiders should stay the course on Mendoza. His big-game temperament and upside are too compelling to abandon over a late-breaking narrative. But the fact that this conversation is even happening one month before the draft is a signal worth acknowledging. Certainty at the quarterback position is rare. Las Vegas better be sure.
