Maxx Crosby’s latest training camp dust-up adds another layer of noise for the Las Vegas Raiders as they try to build a focused, disciplined team.
The Raiders spent the offseason trying to convince a skeptical fan base that this regime is different. And that the culture is fixed; that the losing is over. Then, on a Friday practice field, their franchise quarterback grabbed their best player by the jersey in front of reporters. In an instant, the story of the week became a fistfight that never actually happened.
That’s the real cost here, and it has little to do with who would win a scrap between Kirk Cousins and Crosby. It’s that a team already fighting for legitimacy just handed the rest of the league a reason to wonder if the drama follows this franchise no matter who’s in charge.
The details are almost beside the point…
Cousins, hit twice on the arm during 11-on-11 work, shoved Crosby and grabbed his jersey. Crosby, who had already been warned by new coach Klint Kubiak’s staff about contact near the quarterback, was pulled from the drill. Teammates separated them before it got out of hand. It was the second scuffle of that practice alone. This came after a shoving match between Caleb Rogers and Jonah Laulu that included a thrown punch.

Kubiak called it leadership colliding, while Michael Mayer called it an edge. Honestly, both are generous readings of a moment that, played on a loop across social media, does little to help either player. Cousins is trying to hold off a rookie phenom for the starting job. Crosby is trying to prove his surgically repaired knee and the failed physical that derailed his move to Baltimore are behind him.
Neither player asked for the attention. But intent stops mattering once the word gets out. The thing is, will this be forgotten about by the time preseason kicks off next week? Or will this play out as just more evidence the “Raiders will always Raider”?

Tempers flaring, pushing, shoving & an occasional punch being tossed have been part of football training camps since they have had training camps. The camps are hot, tiring, physical & violent so sometimes things happen. The incidents are always brief and no one cares except media attempting to make it into something. These 2 incidents are probably not even on any of the people in the buildings mind or concern any longer.

First let me say Raider Ramble is one of the premier media outlets and whatever you guys make in this endeavor it isn’t nearly enough. Maxx Crosby has mentioned on his podcast that he intentionally makes contact with the quarterback in practice to see if he and offensive players fight back. If they do, great! If they don’t, there’s a major problem. Thanks!
Appreciate the compliment, truly. We don’t do this for the money, the industry’s basically dead for independent creators at this point. We do it because Raider Nation deserves coverage without an agenda, coverage that’s not chasing angles or trying to build a brand off the team’s back.
