Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby just lost $23K because of one decision. Here’s what happened and why it cost him.
Crosby will pay $23,882 for helmet use, the NFL announced Saturday, after he head-butted a New England Patriots player last week. The fine was predictable. The league has fined players for nearly every extracurricular act this season, and a helmet-to-helmet shove is not subtle.
For a player who recently signed one of the richest contracts in the NFL, the amount is a rounding error. The cost is elsewhere. Crosby’s value to the Raiders depends on his hands, his burst and his discipline, and a lapse in any of them costs more than a paycheck deduction. Whatever the Patriots player said to provoke him, the penalty belongs to Crosby alone.
That fire is also why the Raiders pay him. Crosby plays with a ferocity that cannot be coached in and should not be coached out. The trick is aiming it at the quarterback instead of at opponents’ facemasks.

He was not at his best against New England, but few Raiders were. The Patriots beat them soundly, and the schedule offers no relief. Next up is Buffalo, another elite opponent.
The Bills present two distinct problems. Josh Allen can beat a defense from the pocket or outside it, and running back James Cook can turn any soft edge into a long gain. Crosby’s assignment is therefore twofold: collapse the pocket and stay disciplined on the perimeter.
Those jobs pull in opposite directions. An end who rushes upfield in pursuit of a sack risks giving up the edge to Allen’s legs. Conversely, an end who plays too conservatively allows Allen the time he needs to dissect the defense. While gap integrity and containment may not be flashy, they ultimately determine whether Crosby’s pressure results in a sack or a 20-yard scramble.
The Raiders do not need a highlight reel from their star. They need a complete game: disciplined on the edge, disruptive up the middle and composed when emotions flare.
The fine is a small price but a costly mistake on Sunday would not be.
