Kirk Cousins Is Doing His Job, So Why Do the Raiders Keep Losing?

Kirk Cousins is making Las Vegas Raiders history, but they keep losing. One alarming third-quarter trend may explain why the team can’t get out of its own way.

Cousins has given the Raiders the quarterback production they spent years seeking. He has thrown 14 touchdown passes through his first six games with the franchise, tying Jeff George for the most by a Raiders quarterback in that span. He has passed for 200 yards or more in five straight games, the longest such streak by a Raiders player since Derek Carr in 2022. The numbers are real, and they raise an uncomfortable question: Why does this team keep losing?

The answer is not in the passing game. Cousins and Tre Tucker connected for two touchdowns in the loss to Buffalo, including a 44-yard score. Production like that should win games. It did not, which suggests the problem sits elsewhere.

The most precise indicator is the third quarter…

Cousins said the Raiders could be a much better team if that part of their game improves, and the data supports him. Las Vegas has been outscored by 26 points in the third quarter this season, the worst margin in the NFL. That is not random fluctuation. It points to a pattern in how the team adjusts after halftime.

Halftime is the one period when a coaching staff has uninterrupted time to diagnose problems and install fixes. A team that repeatedly loses the third quarter is a team whose solutions are not working or whose opponents are solving them faster. Either explanation points to preparation and in-game coaching, not talent alone.

A quarterback who throws for 200 yards in five consecutive games is also carrying a heavy share of the offense, while a defense that cannot stop the run or pressure the passer returns the ball to him in worse field position.

Now, a lighter note for a fan base that has earned one. A fan account on X noted that Matthew Stafford is seven days from tying the record for most career losses and called it almost poetic that Cousins, whom the poster considers the superior quarterback, could be the one to deliver it. Whether Cousins has been the better quarterback is a matter of opinion, but Raiders fans are entitled to enjoy the irony. A team whose third quarters keep unraveling could use a little poetry.

The joke carries a serious edge, though. If Cousins is going to play the role of spoiler, the Raiders cannot keep being the team that loses while its quarterback does his job. Production without wins is just a well-kept record of what might have been.
